Fire towers in the wilderness areas of the Adirondacks are an exception to the rule of no human structures permitted in these areas.  Their  juxtaposition to the otherwise "wild" landscape in which they are imbedded is somehow iconic of our strange conceptions of our relation to the rest of the natural world.
